Alien landings for Tilbury Pioneer pupils...

Year 1 pupils celebrated an Alien King and Queen day in the lead up to the phonics screening check. The day saw them focus on alien words throughout the day and the different 'special friends' they could use to create new nonsense words.
Being able to read nonsense words is crucial to a child becoming a fluent reader because it ensures that they can read the sounds they have learnt in all different types of words (real and otherwise) so that when they come across a word they have never seen before they will always be able to decode what it says.
In the afternoon, the parents had an information session with Miss Quayle who explained how we teach phonics at Tilbury Pioneer and provided the parents with resources to take home to ensure the children are always practicing. They then joined their children in class to see a speed sounds session in action.
