Dear Parents/Carers

Re: Introduction of RSE: January 2022

As a trust we have been auditing and revising the PHSE and RSE curriculum in order to implement the statutory requirement to teach Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Teaching RSE forms part of our broader commitment to the delivery of high quality PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education).

The structure of PSHE, including RSE

The school will be adopting a new PHSE curriculum scheme of work:

SCARF: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship

Coram Life Education & SCARF are the UK's leading charity provider of PSHE and wellbeing education in primary schools.

Scarf provides:

  • A Whole-school approach
  • Fully resourced comprehensive PSHE programme
  • All DfE statutory requirements for Relationships & Health Education
  • Half term units of work & planning from Nursery to Year 6
  • Assessment tools & progression embedded
  • Comprehensive staff SCARF training
  • Access to specialist training
  • Support of a SCARF co-ordinator

SCARF's approach supports us in promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement – and provides everything required to meet the new Relationships Education and Health Education statutory requirements. More than just a PSHE scheme of work, SCARF supports great learning every day.

SCARF lesson plans have been designed to cover all aspects of PSHE (including RSHE). The SCARF half-termly units provide a spiral curriculum, ensuring age-appropriate teaching and learning from children’s first to final year at primary school.

Please view the RSE policy for further detail about the topics covered by our new curriculum file://gateway-13/diane.pierson/downloads/Relationships-and-Sex-Education-Policy-Primary-Autumn-2021-24.pdf

A more detailed overview of our new PHSE scheme of work can be found here.

We are keen to gather the views of parents/carers in relation to these policies and the curriculum that we provide students.

If you would like to provide any feedback, please do so by accessing the questionnaire and feedback form by Thursday 3rd February 2022  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1WZBYB9FeD8GREdvZ6olLB6RBuEP6QhyNVaxwysc8x9k/edit

Staff and Governors will also be consulted on the policies/curriculum. In addition, the pupils will be able to feed into the process as members of the Pupil leadership team and school council.

The right to withdraw

It is important that we point out, as outlined within the statutory guidance, you have the right to request your child be withdrawn from all or part of sex education (only) lessons that are delivered as part of RSE.

Please note that you do not have a right to withdraw your child from:

  • Relationships Education
  • Any sex education delivered as part of the science curriculum
  • Health Education

Although you have the legal right to request to withdraw your child from any or all of sex education as part of Relationships Education, it is our aim to encourage parents to see the value of RSE learning and its contribution to keeping children safe, developing their emotional, social and physical wellbeing and for promoting equality and social justice. Should you decide that you do not wish for your child to take part in any of these lessons, we would ask that you first speak to the Headteacher to discuss your concerns. The Headteacher will discuss the request with you to fully understand and address any concerns/objections to the content of the curriculum. If following this you do decide to withdraw your child, you should inform the Headteacher in writing and the school will keep a record of this.

Over the Spring term, we will deliver special assemblies to introduce children to the new curriculum. We are sure you will agree that this important curriculum implementation will play a vital role in the education of your son/daughter over the coming years and will support you in your role as parents/carers and strengthen the partnership between home and school.

Please do not hesitate to contact us at the school if you have any further questions.

Yours sincerely

Viki Reid
