17 March 2020

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing in response to the Government’s announcement related to COVID-19 and the new measures they have introduced including ‘social distancing’.  As an education provider charged with providing a safe learning environment, the health and wellbeing of our young people and staff is always our first consideration and we will take the necessary steps to protect our community.

The recent Government announcement places all schools [including those in the GLC] in a very challenging position.  The GLC has over 3000 young people and 500 staff.  All of these families have their own unique circumstances and situations and therefore, it is increasingly likely that our normal provision is likely to be significantly compromised over the coming days and weeks.  We will, of course endeavour to provide the best possible education for our children but wanted to be realistic with parents about our ongoing ability to do that as well as we would want to.

Following Government advice today, if your child or a close family member is in any of the high-risk groups [as outlined below] we will encourage parents to make appropriate decisions about whether to choose to keep your child at home at this current time [this absence will of course be authorised].  The high-risk groups are those with:

  • Auto-immune issues.
  • HIV.
  • Severe asthma.
  • Diabetes.
  • Heart conditions.
  • Reduced immunity.

The Government have also included the following two groups as a precautionary measure although they are not currently considered to be high-risk:

  • Pregnant women.
  • Carers of highly vulnerable adults in the same household.

We have issued the same advice to all GLC staff.

Should your child be absent from school we would ask that you continue to inform the attendance staff of their absence.

The Government has now advised that, if a child is off school with the COVID-19 symptoms [a continuous cough and/or a high temperature] the child and their siblings should stay at home.

All trips and visits planned to take place for the near future have also been cancelled.

On a day to day basis, we are assessing if we can continue to function safely.  Whilst we are doing our best to adhere to the Government’s instructions to stay open, it may be that due to high level of staff absence, we are forced to close certain year groups.  If this is the case, we will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible.

These are exceptional times and as always, I am grateful for your continued support and understanding.

Best wishes

Kevin Sadler
