Anti-Bullying Week in England is coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and this year takes place from the 13-17 November 2017.

Anti-Bullying Week shines a spotlight on bullying and encourages all children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year.

The theme this year is ‘Power for Good’ with the following key aims:

  • To support children and young people to use their Power for Good – by understanding the ways in which they are powerful  and encouraging individual and collective action to stop bullying and create the best world possible.
  • To help parents and carers to use their Power for Good– through supporting children with issues relating to bullying and working together with schools to stop bullying.
  • To encourage all teachers, school support staff and youth workers to use their Power for Good – by valuing the difference they can make in a child’s life, and taking individual and collective action to prevent bullying and create safe environments where children can thrive.

Academies within the GLC believe that the way we feel about our relationships and ourselves has a major impact on our ability to learn. Pupils need to feel safe and secure at their Academy in order to learn and achieve. Research shows that the most common effects of bullying are anxiety and depression, poor self‐esteem and withdrawal. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Pupils who are bullying need help to learn different ways of behaving.

Bullying is behaviour by an individual or group, repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual or group either physically or emotionally.

Bullying can be:

  • Emotional ‐ being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting (e.g. hiding books, using threatening gestures)
  • Physical ‐ pushing, kicking, punching or any use of violence.
  • Racist ‐ racial taunts, graffiti, gestures.
  • Sexual ‐ unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments.
  • Homophobic ‐ because of, or focusing on the issue of sexuality.
  • Verbal – name‐calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours and teasing.
  • Cyber ‐ email and internet chat room misuse, mobile phone threats by text, calls, social websites.

These forms of bullying can take place at school, both in and outside of the classroom, as well as via social networks and the internet.  At the GLC, we recognise that there is no “hierarchy” of bullying – all forms of bullying should be taken equally seriously and dealt with appropriately.  We understand that bullying can take place between pupils, between pupils and staff, or between staff; by individuals or groups; face‐to‐face, indirectly or using a range of cyber bullying methods.

We aim to create an environment across the GLC where pupils can grow and flourish without fear.   Each pupil has the right to be safe in and out of school and to be protected when s/he is feeling vulnerable.  We aim:

  • To ensure that children learn in a supportive, caring and safe environment, without fear of being bullied.
  • To demonstrate that the GLC Academies take bullying seriously and that it will not be tolerated.
  • To take measures to prevent all forms of bullying in the GLC Academies and during off‐site activities.
  • To support everyone in actions to identify and protect those who might be bullied.
  • To clarify for all pupils and staff that bullying is wholly and always unacceptable.
  • To demonstrate to all that the safety and happiness of pupils is paramount.
  • To promote an environment where children feel they can trust and tell adults if they are being bullied or know about any bullying.
  • To promote positive attitudes in pupils (including conflict management training).
  • To ensure that all staff are aware of their duty of care over those in their charge and the need to be alert to signs of bullying.
  • To ensure that all staff are aware of procedures through regular training.
  • To raise awareness of bullying and promote positive relationships based on mutual respect.

The purpose of the anti-bullying policy, which can be found on the GLC website is to:

Provide a framework to promote the emotional health and well being of the GLC by providing:

  • A supportive culture and ethos.
  • A curriculum which supports positive relationships.
  • A safe, secure and stimulating environment.
  • Strategies to support the victim and the bully.
  • A consistent approach to dealing with incidents of bullying.

The children and adults at Tilbury Pioneer Academy enjoyed promoting anti-bullying week 2016 with the help of the enthusiastic Gateway Mentors who visited their school.  The theme for this year was ‘Power for Good’ and this message was talked about in an excellent assembly led by the Gateway Mentors together with the Pioneer Mentors, supported by Mrs Karen Hubbard, Inclusion Advocate.

The message is that we are all powerful in tackling the issue of bullying in our school. Our motto is;

  • Pupils are powerful by understanding the way in which they report incidents
  • Parents are powerful by supporting their children in talking about any issues and working with the school
  • Adults who work in the school are powerful by valuing the difference they make in the children’s lives and creating a safe environment.

This message was reinforced by the activities held in the afternoon in each class by the Gateway Mentors.  A pledge was made by all the children in each class with everybody contributing and inputting their ideas.  These class pledges are going to be shared, displayed prominently in school and also released by balloon at an event at Lansdowne Primary Academy on the last day of Anti Bullying week, Friday 18 November 2016.

The fun activities in each class also embedded the anti-bullying message and a survey was completed by each child to get their views on how bullying is dealt with by the school.  These results will be taken forward and the Pioneer Mentors will work throughout the year to continue to support the adults to provide a safe place for the children to come to school and learn everyday.
