Operation Encompass
The Gateway Learning Community is signed up to Operation Encompass
Operation Encompass is a police and education early intervention partnership. This initiative enables police to notify schools by 9:00 a.m. on the next school day when a child has experienced domestic abuse. This timely sharing of information allows schools to provide immediate, tailored support to help children cope with the impact of these experiences.
Operation Encompass is now a statutory requirement across England and Wales.
Key Aspects of Operation Encompass
- Statutory Status: Since May 2024, it is a legal requirement in England and Wales for police to share information with education settings when a child has been exposed to domestic abuse.
- Purpose: To safeguard children from the immediate and long-term effects of domestic abuse by ensuring they receive prompt support in school following an incident.
- Process: Police notify a designated Key Adult within the school (usually a safeguarding lead) before the start of the school day after an incident has occurred.
- Scope: The scheme applies to children who have witnessed or been present during a domestic abuse incident.
Impact on Children
- Immediate Support: Schools can respond with care and understanding—offering practical help such as breakfast, clean uniform, or a quiet, safe space—without requiring the child to explain their situation.
- Reduced Trauma: Early intervention helps to reduce anxiety, fear, and disruption, supporting children’s emotional wellbeing and readiness to learn.
