During Autumn 1, our Head Pupil agenda focused on clubs at TPA. We discussed and evaluated which clubs are often fully booked and which have been long-standing favourites, exploring the reasons behind their popularity.

During one break time, we gathered pupil voice through a Graffiti Wall activity, asking everyone what clubs they would like to see in Autumn 2. These ideas were then shared with the Leadership Team (staff), who helped to narrow down the suggestions.

In Week 7, pupils took part in a final vote to decide which new clubs they’d most like to see introduced. I hope you have been happy with the selection available this half term.

In the morning, we went on a nature walk and collected various fallen petals and leaves, which we later used to create beautiful bookmarks. Each group used a clothes peg as a ‘beak’, just like a bird would to collect materials — it turned into a fun competition to see who could create the biggest and best nest!

In the afternoon, we moved indoors and took part in a carousel of five exciting activities in our groups:

Using magnifying glasses to examine dead animals and insects found at Hyde Hall.

Using a variety of seeds to create colourful designs on bookmarks with crayons and paper.

Mrs. Nathan, a long-time supporter of education, and loyal member of the Thames Opera Company, has gifted a beautiful family heirloom piano to our reception area, hoping to inspire a lifelong love of music in our youngest pupils.

The elegant instrument, which has been cherished by generations of Mrs. Nathan’s family, now sits proudly in the reception space, already captivating the attention of curious little minds. "Music has always been a central part of my family's life, and this piano holds many treasured memories," shared Mrs. Nathan. "I believe every child deserves the chance to experience the joy of making music, and I truly hope this piano will be the first step on a wonderful musical journey for many of them."

Her thoughtful donation provides an invaluable opportunity for our reception children to engage with a real instrument from an early age. It's a chance for them to explore sounds, develop an ear for melody, and perhaps even discover a hidden talent.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Nathan for her remarkable generosity and for bringing such a special piece of her family's history into our school. As part of their science topic on states of matter and reversible changes, the children applied their knowledge to melt chocolate and create their own custom bars.

Each child began by selecting the type of chocolate they wanted to use—milk, dark, or white—and carefully observed the melting process, identifying it as a reversible change. Once melted, they poured the chocolate into moulds and personalised their creations with a selection of sweets, toppings, and other ingredients.

Parents worked alongside the children, making the experience even more enjoyable and collaborative. Once complete, the chocolate bars were placed in the fridge to set.

As a final touch, each student designed their own chocolate bar packaging using Canva, showcasing their creativity and digital design skills. The finished bars will be placed into these custom boxes, ready to be taken home and enjoyed.

During the zoom session, Elle shared her journey to becoming an author, including the inspirations behind her novels and the challenges she faced along the way. She spoke passionately about how her own experiences as a neurodivergent individual shaped the characters and themes in her books. Her stories resonated deeply with the pupils, many of whom were inspired by her advocacy for embracing differences and standing up for what is right. The highlight of the event was the interactive Q&A session, where pupils asked Elle questions about the writing process, how to develop interesting characters and tips for overcoming writers' block.

They boarded a train as evacuees, helped with potato harvesting, and listened to historical speeches by Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill on a wireless radio.

The children, along with their parents, chopped, peeled and grated their ingredients as well as adding spices. The children then took these home to cook and taste - which turned out delightful!

The activity emphasised folding techniques and careful cutting to replicate the intricate designs and layered roofs typical of Nepalese architecture. Parents and students collaborated to visualise, measure, and build structures that honoured the unique features of these temples. This hands-on experience fostered teamwork, creativity, and an appreciation for cultural architectural styles, all while enhancing practical skills in design and construction.

During their annual end of year fundraiser called 'Penny Wars', the Friends of Pioneer challenged the TPA classes to gather as many pennies as possible from each class. The class that collected the most pennies would win their class amount back to go towards a class treat at the end of the year.

The total amount raised was £375.06, with class 4C emerging as the winner by collecting £73.63. However, the class collectively decided to forego their prize in light of families in need, opting instead to donate to the Thurrock Foodbank in their honour. Friends of Pioneer shopped for food items just above the winning amount and on July 22nd, they made a donation of 53.2kg of food items to Thurrock Foodbank on behalf of class 4C. A commendable decision by class 4C.
